on our way to Colorado we checked out the famous Fossil Butte National Monument (we hadn't heard of it either), which is this huge fossil area where there are lots of fossils and stuff. it was one of the saddest monuments we've visited on this trip, because it seems like no one ever goes there. i felt sorry for the ranger, who seemed very lonely, and who seemed to take a very very keen liking to kiki.
in a testament to how tired and bored of driving we were, we hung out at the visitor's center and watched this extensive fossil video. anything not to get back in the car.
in our delusional planning, we thought we could make it from the Tetons to Telluride, but we got a late start (and hung out at the Butte) so we had to find a place along the way. not to mention kiki took a wrong turn and we drove 100 miles out of our way, but we won't go into that since we agreed not to discuss it anymore. the past is the past. and there's no need to dwell on driving 100 miles out of the way. in other words, the 100 miles that we drove, out of our way, were inconsequential. and in fact now i look back fondly at those 100 miles (spent driving the wrong way)
anyway, all the hotels in all the towns we tried were completely full (apparently because of an oil boom going on in the area - everything was reserved by the oil companies) so we were pretty screwed.
luckily, on the map we noticed this thing called "Dinosaur National Monument", that had a campsite listed, so at 11:30 we kept our fingers crossed and hoped they'd have a site.
we lucked out and got a space, and in the morning realized it was quite a beautiful location..
unfortunately the main attraction of the Monument was closed because of some earthquake (this excavation site) but we did at least get to see the giant plastic dinosaur in the parking lot.
