made our way to PCH from Napa Valley and took the windy coastal route to Eureka. as always, PCH was a beautiful drive. this part of the coast looks a lot like the Big Sur area.. golden grass, blue skies, green trees. it took much longer than it would on the 101, but we're not in a hurry, and it was worth it.
on the way we saw this crazy building that must have been designed by someone on large amounts of acid
had lunch at this nice restaurant on a cliff
in Humboldt we stopped at this store that was entirely dedicated to Bigfoot paraphernalia. apparently the area has been known for sightings throughout the years. they had a large library of bigfoot books, t-shirts, etc.. but best of all, they had an extensive collection "bigfoot carvings"..
EUREKA
for some reason i pictured Eureka as being this beautiful little hippy town nestled in the Redwoods (like Santa Cruz or any place in Oregon).. i didn't realize Eureka is the bunghole of Northern California. it was pretty skecthy (lots of crackheads and hookers hanging out with their pimps in front of shitty hotels [the pimps did have dread locks at least, so there was somewhat of a hippy vibe])..
we decided to keep going and made our way to the Humboldt State University area further north. the only place we could find available was Super 8 Motel. it was no Hotel Duchamp, but hey, this is a road trip! it's about adventure
Room at Super 8 Motel (note the McDonalds right out our window)
we had a nice view of the McDonalds drive-through from our window
we did cruise out to the downtown college area and had some great food and drinks..
i think i saw maybe 2 or 3 people in the whole town who didn't have gigantic nappy dread locks. long live Humboldt!
today, off to Oregon...
